| This ride
will take you to the best places on Cape Cod in
one day, from the Rail Trail that spans a good
length of the Cape, to the long beaches of the
National Seashore and the back roads of the countryside.
By far one of the nicest rides in New England.
A rental shop along the way will allow you to
go on this ride even if you don't own a bike. |
 |
|
In all seasons,
biking is the best way to discover or rediscover
Cape Cod. The reasonable distances, flat terrain
and abundance of small, backcountry roads make
this place a paradise.
In spring and fall, you will be mostly alone
on the road; in summer, your bike will be a
passport to the beaches and remote parts of
the Cape, at a time when access roads and parking
lots are chocked with traffic.
|
 |
|
This ride is
on flat ground, with a few short hills along
the National seashore. The entire ride is on
paved roads, either bike paths or small roads.
Since the Cape is essentially an island on the
ocean, the place can be windy, especially near
the shore, and bringing a windbreaker or fleece
is always a good idea, even on warm summer days.
|
 |
|
Expect to spend
at least half a day on the ride itself (3 to
5 hours); the ride can easily be stretched into
a full day outing, especially in summer, if
you stop at some of the beaches along the way.

 |
| Riding directions: |
 |
Exit the parking lot and ride
under the bridge to take the ramp up on
your right; then take left (north) on the
bikeway |
 |
At the fourth road intersection,
turn right (sign for the National Seashore) |
 |
Turn left on Salt Pond Road;
at the light, cross route 6 and take the
bike path starting at the parking lot (the
path is the trail with the yellow centerline) |
 |
Ride for about 2 miles through
the pine forest to reach the Coast Guard
Beach Lighthouse; the lighthouse is on high
sand bluffs overlooking the ocean
great place to take a first rest on the
beach. |
 |
To continue your ride, take
the access road, and turn right (there is
a sign to route 6 pointing to the other
way) |
 |
You will reach Nauset Light
Beach and its lighthouse after more than
a mile of a great coastal road; again, the
beach here is a nice stop |
 |
Turn left on Cable Road and
continue until its end; turn left on Nauset
Road, then right on Brackett Road |
 |
At the light, cross route
6 again and continue slightly on the left
on Old County Road |
 |
Turn right on Massassoit Road,
then left on Herringbrook Road |
|
