A quaint
New England village just minutes away from a world-class
snow sports area boasting a 2,360 foot vertical
drop and a strong selection of intermediate trails |
 |
Stowe Mountainside
Resort covers the slope of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont's
highest peak. The resort offers high-end features
such as a speedy eight-person gondola, night
skiing, over 50% intermediate trails, solid
snowmaking coverage, and "the longest average
trail length in New England". The long
trails offset the fact that the lift and trail
quantity aren't as large as some neighboring
resorts, but most visitors come for the "ambience"
of Stowe - not just the challenges of Mt Mansfield.
|
 |
Though lift
tickets are pricey, the combination of great
snow sports with the amenities of the town of
Stowe attract a loyal clientele season after
season. The resort was recently mentioned by
Warren Miller and The Travel Channel as one
of the top 10 resorts in the world, and by Skiing
Magazine as the only East Coast entry in the
publication's recent article on Top Ski Towns.

The Inn at
the Mountain is the only on-mountain accommodation.
With only 33 rooms, the property is booked far
in advance, but many visitors actually prefer
to stay off-mountain in the village of Stowe.
This means a drive up to the mountain each morning,
but parking didn't seem to be a big problem
during our visit. Of course, for late arrivers,
it might mean a bit of a trek up to the lift.
At the end of the day, we usually drew straws
and sent a hardy survivor off to bring the car
around, James! The town of Stowe offers a great
range of lodging, from budget properties to
timeshares to five-star resorts; the resort
offers specials and packages starting at $120
a day per person. The www.gostowe.com website
is your best option to find accommodations and
get information on Stowe activities off-mountain
such as performances and events.

If you are
interested in an exotic dining experience, the
Cliff House offers sit-down dining at the top
of the gondola. If members of your group want
to meet the skiers and boarders for lunch, this
is a great place to do so!
